Structural Optimization

Optimization of engineering structures often involves multiple iterations which is, given the non-closed-form solution yielded by FEA, is a tedious task. Alcyon uses the optimization module of Nastran for optimization of linear / nonlinear structures undergoing static / dynamic loading to achieve the target stresses, displacements, and natural frequencies.

Metal Forming Analysis

Metal Forming is a highly nonlinear analysis involving friction, nonlinear material behavior, and large displacements and strains. Alcyon uses Adina for carrying out such analysis. Based on the analysis results, Alcyon can suggest changes in designs (for the product and punch/die).

Analysis involving Elastomers

Rubbers are the most used materials for vibration isolation in the industry. Preliminary analysis of rubber components such as rubber bushings and dampers is necessary to get the stiffness-vs-frequency values of the component. Based on this analysis, and the type of application depending on the frequency range, the analysis outputs are used for other FE analyses. Alcyon uses Adina for carrying out rubber analysis. Alcyon also uses Adina for carrying out gasket (open / closed / sealed / leaking / crushed) analysis for automotive applications.

Acoustic Studies

At higher frequencies, vehicle vibration is perceived as a pressure variation (noise) to the user. Alcyon carries out structural-acoustic coupled analysis using Nastran to predict sound pressure levels within acoustic cavities as a result of structural vibrations. This information can be used to redesign the structure even before the prototype is built and thus to avoid such problems in the product.

Thermal Effects Analysis

Structures that go through extensive temperature variations might experience distortion leading to lack in expected performance and sometimes go through structural failure. Thermal effects include highly nonlinear effects like radiation and variation of nearly all coefficients and parameters based on temperature changes. Alcyon uses Nastran and the TMG module of I-deas MasterFEM to model complex thermal effects.

Impact and Crash Analysis

Heavy impact leads to a highly nonlinear dynamic behavior in the interacting structures. Alcyon uses Adina for high speed impact and I-deas or Nastran implicit codes for low speed impact problems.

Vehicle and Heavy Machine Dynamics

Engineering assemblies often have to survive severe dynamic environments including transient domain, frequency domain, and random excitation. Alcyon uses Nastran and I-deas MasterFEM Response Dynamics to carry out virtual dynamic simulation of client products and machinery. Alcyon has extensive experience in using industry best-practices to modify, redesign, and optimize products undergoing multiple dynamic loadings.

Analysis for Optimal Vibration Testing

Determining the optimal accelerometer locations in a model for testing is an important prerequisite to dynamic testing. Alcyon creates test-analysis models for client models and optimizes the accelerometer positions using orthogonality checks. The result of these analyses, besides the optimized number and position of accelerometers, are outputs such as likely mode shapes and test-model correlations.
